About

Hello and welcome!  I’m Sandy Fleming, your hostess here at Free Help for Reading.  I’m glad you’ve dropped in, and I can’t wait to get to know you!  This site was created to provide resources for parents of struggling readers, especially those who perhaps cannot afford other educational options.  FHFR offers free guidance and information so you can help your child on your own.  Of course, like any website, simply offering the information is far from free.  I have set things up so that you can get everything you need to help your child at no financial cost by becoming a free member of FHFR.  To offset some of the costs for site maintenance and compensate me for my time and effort, many of my reading-related products are offered for sale.  There are also subscriptions available where you can get far more help for fees far lower than many other educational support options.

I am an educational consultant, tutor and writer living in Michigan.  I’ve been assisting families and struggling readers for over 30 years.  In addition to my experience with teaching reading, I base my programs on knowledge from my Master’s Degree in Special Education, numerous continuing education classes, and wide-ranging research and consultation with my peers.  I work hard to stay up to date with the latest research about reading and literacy development.

Like any worthwhile but difficult pursuit, helping your child (or yourself) to improve reading skills takes time and effort.  The suggestions found on this site won’t work by themselves by magic.  You will need to practice each day.  Improvement will not happen overnight.  In fact, it will probably take months and months or even years of work to improve skills the way you want to.  Hang in there!  From time to time, I will direct you through activities that will help you see improvement and progress.  Be encouraged, and keep on keepin’ on!
